Ben-James Brown is a national leader in financial health who has spent more than 25 years helping people and entire communities build stronger financial futures. Today, he serves as the Vice President of Financial Health and Philanthropy at the Wells Fargo Foundation, where he leads major initiatives that expand financial education, economic opportunity, and long term stability for youth, young adults and families across the country. Before stepping into philanthropy, Ben-James served as an Executive Director for the Branch Network, overseeing banking operations across California, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland. In this role, he managed more than a billion dollars in deposits, lending, and investments within his portfolios and led nearly 2,000 employees throughout his career. That experience taught him a core belief he carries into every space he leads- when people understand money, they gain choices, confidence, and power. Ben-James has helped launch and strengthen financial health programs nationwide, including platforms that support LGBTQ+ youth and older adults, such as SAGECents, a digital tool designed to reduce financial stress and increase stability. His work focuses on closing financial gap, making financial knowledge accessible, understandable, and useful for real life. Beyond his role at Wells Fargo, Ben-James is a trusted advisor to nonprofits and community organizations, helping them grow their impact, secure resources, and embed financial health into their missions. His career reflects a deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and expanding opportunities for historically excluded communities. Ben-James holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and is also an active civic leader. He has served as a Commissioner for the DC Mayor’s Office on Fathers, Men, and Boys and currently serves as a Commissioner for the DC Commission on African American Affairs. He is the Treasurer for DC SCORES and an engaged member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the 100 Black Men of Greater Washington, D.C. Most importantly, Ben James is a proud single father to his son, Deshawn James, a Goldendoodle dad to Jax, and a dedicated plant parent.
